European Conference of Defence and Environment, ECDE

 

The third international European Conference of Defence and the Environment (ECDE) was organized in May-June 2017. The conference was organized by the Finnish Defence Administration with its partners in cooperation with the European-wide expert network DEFNET and the Nordic-Baltic Defence Estates (NBDE). DEFNET is an informal network of experts specialising in the field of environmental protection from the defence ministers of different EU countries. NBDE co-operates with the defence ministries of the Nordic and Baltic countries.

The third ECDE conference addressed the environmental impact of military action, especially in shooting ranges, and the management of substances that are hazardous to the environment. The theme of this ECDE conference was the damage caused by PFASs in military areas. The conference invited experts in various fields from Europe and North America to present their research and development work. Other topics included environmental management, policy and legislation, and the energy efficiency of defence properties. The ECDE conference is a forum for various stakeholder groups, including political policy makers, experts from various fields, authorities, researchers, and industry representatives.


The conference was opened by Permanent Secretary Hannele Pokka of the Ministry of the Environment and Lieutenant General Raimo Jyväsjärvi, Head of the Department of Defence. Ambassador Bruce Oreck and the President of the Finnish Emergency Supply Agency Raimo Luoma also spoke at the opening ceremony.
